Blast Helmet Care and Maintenance

23rd Dec 2014

Your blast helmet is one of the most important pieces of equipment you will use as a blaster, so it is very important to keep it in good condition. Not only will this help your helmet last longer, saving you money, but it will also ensure that your helmet continues to function correctly and provide maximum protection in the blasting environment.

CLEANING

It is important to keep your helmet clean and hygienic, particularly if it has internal padding. Different blast helmets must be cleaned using different methods but, as a general rule, hard surfaces should be wiped down with a liquid detergent and any fabric or padding should be either wiped with water and a light detergent to keep it fresh or, where possible, removed and washed or replaced if necessary. You can also spray the inside of the helmet with a disinfectant spray to get rid of germs. You should never use volatile chemicals as these may damage the helmet and could be dangerous to breathe in.

LENSES AND LENS GASKETS

You should regularly check the lenses and lens gasket of your helmet for splits, cracks and other wear and tear. Damaged parts should be replaced immediately as they could stop the helmet from functioning correctly. You should also clean the lens regularly to make sure you maintain good visibility. This can be done with warm water and a gentle detergent and you should leave the lens to air dry afterwards. Some helmets are available with tear off lenses which protect the outer lens and allow you to keep working continuously for longer. You should replenish these regularly to make sure the outer lens stays in good condition.

BREATHING TUBES

Inspect the breathing tube of your helmet regularly to make sure there are no splits or holes. Make sure that all fittings are in good condition and are not allowing any air to escape. The tube and any fittings should be replaced if they become worn or damaged to maintain the quality of the air coming into the helmet.

VISOR

If your helmet has a visor you should open this and clean out any collected abrasive with a cloth or air blow down gun after each blasting session. This will help to protect the helmet from unnecessary wear and tear.

AIR SUPPLY HOSE

You should regularly check your air hose for cracks, blisters or signs of abrasion and replace it immediately if there are any signs of wear. To help prevent damage, you should make sure the hose is stored properly – no kinks and not crushed beneath anything else. You should also make sure all fittings are crimped securely to the hose and that no air is escaping. You should also regularly clean couplings with a cloth or an air blow down gun to remove any abrasive that has collected.

STORAGE

Make sure your helmet is stored away from excessive heat, cold, moisture, dust and harmful chemicals. It’s a good idea to store your helmet in its original packaging or in a plastic bag or airtight container. If your helmet features a hand strap it is a good idea to hang it up on a hook somewhere safe as this will help keep the inside free of contaminants.
